Dr. Jayajit Chakraborty, Associate Professor and the Director of Geography at the University of South Florida, Tampa, FL USA. His research interests are located at the intersection of health geography, hazards geography, and urban geography, and encompass a wide range of environmental and social justice concerns.
Jayajit Chakraborty received his M.S. in Urban and Regional Planning (1993) and Ph.D. in Geography (1999) from the University of Iowa. His health-related research activities have focused primarily on the unequal spatial and social distribution of environmental health hazards and their sources. His research utilizes GIScience and spatial statistical techniques. Jayajit s publications on environmental health justice have appeared in American Journal of Public Health, Annals of the Association of American Geographers, Environment and Planning A, Health and Place, Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, Professional Geographer, Risk Analysis, Social Science Research, and other peer-reviewed journals. He has also published an edited book titled Spatial and Environmental Injustice in an American Metropolis: A Study of Tampa Bay, Florida, a compilation of empirical research on the nexus between environmental and social inequalities in Florida s fastest-growing metropolitan area.
Jayajit s research activities have been funded by grants from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Science Foundation, and the Florida Department of Transportation. Additionally, he was commissioned by the EPA to co-author and present a paper that served as the basis for discussion at a national symposium Strengthening Environmental Justice Research and Decision Making: A Symposium on the Science of Disproportionate Environmental Health Impacts (2010). Jayajit is currently an editorial board member of the International Journal of Population Research. He has also served as the Chair of the Association of American Geographers Hazards Specialty Group (2005-2007) and Associate Chair of the Geography Department at the University of South Florida (2009-2011).
